Meet the 2018 Tech & Innovation Awards Judges

To put our finalists to the test, we rely on an expert panel of judges made up of individuals from right across the industry and selected for their specialist knowledge and expertise. Their time and commitment is vital to the credibility of these awards and ensures a balanced and independent approach.


Emma Bell, Digital Director, SPF Private Clients

Emma is passionate about using technology to transform experiences, products, customer journeys & provide new solutions.

She is ACII and a Chartered Insurance Broker who co-founded Ambition First; a talent initiative focused on helping the next generation reach their potential. With a background in digital marketing and technology she is passionate about disrupting from within and constantly challenging the industry conventions to work towards a more innovative and forward-thinking future.

Emma is on several industry boards and committees; as well as mentoring and regularly speaking at Industry events in Fintech and Instech.

Matt Connolly, CEO, Tällt Ventures

Matt has worked within tech innovation for the past 15+ years.

In 2003 he founded a digital innovation agency which grew to become the UK’s #1. He subsequently went on to build, and invest in, a number of tech startups. Recognising the opportunity to help companies better understand, adapt and succeed in today’s changing world, Matt launched Tällt Ventures – a market scanning and innovation company.

Tällt’s core product, Sønr, tracks the trends, insights, ventures, corporate innovators, accelerators and investors across the insurance ecosystem. And with unique access to this intelligence, Tällt works with insurers around the world to acquire, partner or build new businesses.

In addition to spending much of his time travelling, Matt speaks regularly at conferences and enjoys meeting people who share his passion for disruptive innovation.

Craig Foster, CEO, HomeServe Labs

Craig is the CEO of HomeServe Labs, the company that invented and launched the LeakBot IOT smart leak detector that has gained traction with a number of major insurers across the UK and Europe.  LeakBot previously won the Insurance Times Breakthrough in IOT Award in 2016 and Craig won the Insurance Times Tech Champion of The Year Award in 2017

Tshidi Hagan, Programme Director, Startupbootcamp InsurTech London

Tshidi Hagan is the Programme Director of Startupbootcamp InsurTech London (a prominent global insurance technology accelerator programme). She responsible for leading the acceleration of startups delivering solutions poised to transform the insurance industry in collaboration with (re)insurers, investors and various subject matter experts. Prior to this, she was an Advisor in Residence at Startupbootcamp InsurTech London responsible for adapting the Programme’s strategy to align with the emerging enterprise innovation, technology and business trends and implementing the delivery of ongoing value to key stakeholders.

Yannis Korgialos, Commerical Director, Munich Re Digital Partners

Yannis is the Commercial Director heading European partners & products in Munich Re Digital Partners, which aims to build a portfolio of digital business models and support the development of disruptive technologies in the Insurance sector.

Key responsibilities include commercial agreements and performance of MRDP Europe, the development and execution of the partner engagement strategy across Europe and onboarding management of Insuretech companies across Europe & US.

Previous experience includes multiple roles across the Financial Services sector with a focus in management consulting (Oliver Wyman) and equity capital markets (Credit Suisse).

Ben Luckett, Managing Director, Aviva Ventures

Ben Luckett is the Managing Director of Aviva Ventures – Aviva’s Corporate Venture Capital Fund. His role is to invest in early stage, high growth potential companies for strategic returns. He set up the £100m fund in 2015 as part of Aviva’s Innovation Strategy and invests across IOT, Big Data and Insuretech.

Prior to this Ben was the Strategy Director for the UK General Insurance Business and has also held roles in Enterprise Risk and Finance.

Prior to joining Aviva Ben was Senior Marketing Manager at Centrica where he was responsible for the online channel for British Gas.

Ben started his career at Accenture where he was a change management consultant specialising in Customer Experience Design for Banking and Insurance clients.

Dan Mines, Head of Digital Transformation, Admiral

As one of’s early employees, Dan Mines – a digital transformation specialist now employed by Admiral – has seen first-hand how a start-up can grow rapidly into a successful business. Through his role in Admiral he now collaborates with entrepreneurs to keep Admiral at the forefront of innovation in insurance.

His focus is on innovative ‘Beyond Web’ customer centred insurance products, delivered through the Walled Garden/Closed Platforms where the majority of people now consume the internet.

-Used AI to build disruptive ‘Beyond Web’ user journeys in voice and chat, launching the UK’s first Quote Bot on Facebook Messenger early in 2016 enabling customers to access insurance in a whole new channel of 40+ million underpinned by a social-first acquisition strategy.

Outside of work he is a Director of, a national initiative in Wales to bring together Entrepreneurs, Risk Capital, Academia, Corporates and Government to foster innovation driven entrepreneurship in Wales.

Graeme Newman, Chief Innovation Officer, CFC Underwriting and Head of Cyber

Graeme is the Chief Innovation Officer at CFC Underwriting and Head of Cyber as a class of business. Having spent the early part of his career consulting for Deloitte on a variety of cutting edge internet security projects, Graeme went on to form his own cyber risk management practice before joining CFC – one of the early pioneers of cyber insurance in the London market – in 2008.

Today, Graeme is at the forefront of the rapidly evolving cyber insurance market, leading CFC’s development of new insurance products in this area.  With overall responsibility for cyber as a class of business, Graeme has overseen the introduction of many new innovations in this rapidly changing area of insurance including: the first policy form designed specifically for healthcare entities, the first dedicated cyber incident response mobile application and the creation of CFC’s Cyber Academy.

In 2015 and 2017 Graeme was voted Cyber Risk Industry Person of the Year (London Market) in the annual Advisen awards.

Malcolm Otter, founder, Lumivo

Malcolm is a founder of Lumivo, a specialist digital research agency with a focus on running large-scale UX competitive benchmarks, particularly on UK insurance and other financial service websites. He is an UX specialist with 20+ years of experience working for and running research and design agencies across Europe, Asia and Australia.

Nick Pester, Partner, Capital Law

Nick is Head of the Insurance and InsurTech practices at Capital Law. As well as assisting the traditional Insurance market with Claims, Wordings and Regulatory issues, he leads a cross practice InsurTech team which assists various businesses with on a wide range of sector specific legal, regulatory and commercial issues. The firm also seeks to drive innovation by connecting insurance market incumbents with tech companies seeking to innovate within the sector.

Capital Law are preferred legal advisors to InsurTech Gateway and Nick is a mentor at Startupbootcamp and Plug & Play.

Lee Riley, CEO, ALPS

Lee works closely with clients across the industry to understand their business challenges and deliver solutions for their strategic goals. He has an extensive knowledge of innovation within the sector and industry trends – believing that to be successful, today’s businesses must understand the profiles of their customer, and create products and services to suit a diverse range of needs.

He has more than 20 years of senior management and business process experience, and has a track record of delivering significant improvements in client operational efficiency and financial performance. During his time at ALPS Lee has played a key role in winning substantial pieces of business; including successfully negotiating contracts with insurers, networks and brokers.

Barry Smith, chair, Neos & non-executive director, Unisure

Barry Smith has dedicated his entire career to the financial services and insurance industries. As well as being the Chair of Neos, he is a Non-Executive Director of Uinsure (a digital intermediary principally in the IFA channel) and RB Sport & Leisure Holdings PLC, a consultant with Fenchurch Advisory Partners and an adviser to other companies. Up until very recently Barry was also a Non- Executive Director for Ageas in Turkey, Italy, Portugal and the UK.

John Warburton, CEO, Konsileo

John Warburton is CEO of Konsileo, a start-up commercial insurance broker that wraps technology and data around risk advisors to deliver a more compelling client proposition. He has worked at Aviva, Accenture and most recently Allianz where he was on the Board of the UK commercial business and then responsible for global digital strategy.

John is an Associate of the CII and has an MBA from London Business School. He is also an active commentator on the future of the insurance industry and is the co-author of the CII’s “Future of Commercial Insurance Broking” report and “The Insurtech Book”.
