What is The Brokerage?
The Brokerage is a social mobility charity which connects bright young Londoners from disadvantaged backgrounds with employers in financial and professional services.

What do they do?
The charity helps young people gain the knowledge, skills and experience they need to take those all-important first steps towards a successful career.

By working closely with London businesses through a variety of initiatives, young people are able to gain the support, guidance and knowledge they need to stand out from the crowd and compete with their more advantaged peers.

Over the past 22 years, The Brokerage has introduced over 70,000 young people to careers in financial, professional and related services – young people who once didn’t realise the potential they had or the opportunities available.

Why do they do it?
Imagine if your future was determined purely by your background. What if you never explored the career opportunities outside of your borough because your perceptions of City businesses made you believe they were not for ‘someone like you’?

Did you know that 37% of employees in the financial services sector were educated at private schools, despite just 7% of the UK population being privately educated?

The Brokerage exists to redress this imbalance. By working with disadvantaged students in London, the charity aims to:

  • Increase awareness of financial, professional and related services as a realistic and attainable career path.
  • Develop the employability skills of disadvantaged young people.
  • Work with employers from financial, professional and related services to provide experiences of work and paid opportunities for disadvantaged young people.

The Brokerage in action

Maria, one of The Brokerage’s recent beneficiaries, gained a summer placement at insurance firm Beazley through a programme delivered by The Brokerage, in partnership with Lloyd’s. With no prior knowledge of the insurance sector, Maria found she thoroughly enjoyed working in this field and now hopes to re-join the profession as an actuary once she has completed her studies.

Commenting on her journey, Maria said:

The Brokerage is truly a life-changing organisation. I think I can confidently say that without The Brokerage I would not have begun a career in the insurance sector. They’re a source of support that candidates from my background would otherwise not have.”

Research undertaken by Deloitte and LMG in 2016 suggests that only 8% of insurance firms think they are a role model for diversity across the industry. The Brokerage is working to increase the number of employers that feel prepared and able to support talented young people, so that many more young Londoners, no matter what their background, have access to the exciting career opportunities available.
